Psychology for my students #24
Delve into a nation’s music to gain a deeper feeling for its people and history.
Midwinter in Norway (two to three hours of daylight per day!), and three new musical experiences:
1. An introduction to Kulning –ancient Scandinavian herding calls, designed to carry across immense, mountainous distances.
2. Hearing Norwegian sailors singing OUR Sea Shanties (Drunken Sailor etc.) as though they were their own, in English(!). It made me realise how very close our two sea-faring nations are.
3. Meeting Margaret Stachiewicz, piano professor at Trondheim University and discussing how to provide today's music students with what they really want -not just a classical training!
